Alaska Airlines Makes Historic Fleet Order with 110 New Aircraft
Alaska Airlines (NYSE: ALK) has announced its largest fleet order in the airline's history, committing to acquire 105 new Boeing 737-10 aircraft along with 5 new 787 widebody aircraft. This significant order is set to extend the aircraft delivery stream through 2035 and includes an option for an additional 35 737-10 aircraft.
Strategic Growth and Global Expansion
The expansion comes as part of the airline's ambitious Alaska Accelerate strategic plan. CEO Ben Minicucci remarked, "This fleet investment builds on the strong foundation Alaska has created to support steady, scalable, and sustained growth. These planes will fuel our expansion to more destinations across the globe, ensuring our guests travel aboard the newest, most fuel-efficient aircraft."
This order will increase Alaska Airlines' total order book with Boeing to 245 aircraft, complementing the 94 MAX aircraft currently in operation. The initiative is designed to not only grow the fleet but also to replace older aging models, keeping its fleet one of the youngest and most fuel-efficient among premium global airlines.
Details on Aircraft Models and Delivery Timeline
Alaska Airlines is incorporating a mix of growth and replacement aircraft. The new 737-10 models will enhance the airline's narrowbody fleet, which already includes 737-9 and 737-8 aircraft. The option to adapt to different aircraft models further ensures operational flexibility.
The 5 additional 787 widebody aircraft will enhance the airline's capabilities to serve long-haul international destinations from Seattle, with plans to operate at least 12 such routes by 2030. This order increases the future 787 fleet to 17 aircraft, with five already in service.
Community and Brand Celebration
The announcement was celebrated in Seattle alongside leaders from Boeing and the U.S. Department of Transportation, marking a significant milestone for Alaska Airlines. The first 787-9, featuring Alaska's new global livery inspired by the Aurora Borealis, showcases a striking palette of deep blues and emerald greens.
Minicucci noted, "As we transform into the country's fourth largest global airline, we are proud to introduce this new livery for the Alaska brand. The design is a tribute to Alaska's rich history and a reflection of our bold vision for international growth."
