RTX Secures $438 Million FAA Contract for Advanced Radar Systems
Collins Aerospace, a subsidiary of RTX (NYSE: RTX), has been awarded a significant contract worth $438 million from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This contract is part of the FAA's Radar System Replacement program aimed at modernizing the U.S. National Airspace System. This initiative is a crucial component of the Department of Transportation's efforts to enhance air traffic control capabilities nationwide.
Next-Generation Radar Technology for Air Traffic Control
Under this contract, Collins Aerospace will provide both cooperative and non-cooperative radar systems designed to offer air traffic controllers reliable and secure operational data. This new technology aims to streamline operations by consolidating multiple outdated radar systems into a single, efficient architecture.
Nate Boelkins, president of Avionics at Collins Aerospace, stated, “As a trusted supplier to the FAA for more than 70 years, Collins is ready to rapidly deploy next-generation radar systems that replace outdated technology with a single, modern and interoperable solution. These systems integrate seamlessly with existing infrastructure, enhance safety and efficiency for air traffic controllers, reduce long-term costs, and ensure the system is prepared for the future of the National Airspace.”
Advanced Radar Systems Overview
The new systems to be deployed include:
- Condor Mk3: A cooperative surveillance radar that can directly communicate with aircraft transponders.
- ASR-XM: A non-cooperative radar that detects aircraft through reflected signals.
Both systems are certified to meet FAA surveillance requirements, thanks to prior successful test-site certifications. Currently, over 550 RTX radar systems are operational within the national airspace, providing a robust foundation for this large-scale modernization effort.
