Vuzix and Himax Unveil Groundbreaking Optical Component Design for AR Glasses at CES 2026
In an exciting announcement, Vuzix® Corporation (NASDAQ: VUZI) and Himax Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: HIMX) have unveiled a new Optical Component Reference Design for Augmented Reality (AR) glasses, set to be showcased at the 2026 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada. This innovative design pairs Himax's ultra-compact HX7319FL LCoS microdisplay with Vuzix's advanced waveguide technology, paving the way for lightweight AR glasses that accommodate prescription lenses while ensuring scalable and standardized manufacturing.
Key Features of the New Optical Design
The reference design is characterized by its extensive ODM flexibility, supporting configurations with a 30° field of view (FOV) and over 1000 nits of brightness. The compact architecture includes Himax's HX7319FL LCoS microdisplay, featuring a resolution of 720 × 720 integrated into a projector module that measures only 0.34 c.c. and weighs 0.79 grams.
- Prescription-ready waveguide technology
- Ultra-thin design at 0.35 mm
- Scalable NIL manufacturing for both glass and plastic
This combination allows OEMs and eyewear manufacturers to create products that combine performance, lightweight design, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness—essential for driving commercialization in both consumer and enterprise AR markets.
Expert Insights from Company Executives
Vuzix President and CEO, Paul Travers, commented on the significance of the reference design: "This reflects our focus on delivering practical, manufacturable AR optics that scale beyond prototypes. By combining our prescription-ready waveguide technology with Himax Display's ultra-compact LCoS engine, we enable OEMs and eyewear partners to bring truly wearable AR glasses to market."
Similarly, Hsien Chang Tsai, Vice President of Himax, expressed enthusiasm about their collaboration, stating, "Himax continues to advance ultra-small, low-power LCoS microdisplays for wearable applications. Working with Vuzix allows us to demonstrate how the HX7319FL can integrate into a complete optical solution that meets the performance and manufacturability requirements of next-generation AR eyewear."
