American Oncology Network Welcomes Robert J. McDonald, MD, FACNM, as New Radiology Medical Director
FORT MYERS, Fla., Dec. 10, 2025 — The American Oncology Network (AONC), recognized as one of the fastest-growing community oncology networks in the United States, proudly announces the appointment of Dr. Robert J. McDonald, MD, FACNM, as its new Radiology Medical Director and in-house reading radiologist. This strategic move aims to bolster AON’s ongoing expansion of radiotheranostic services, ensuring advanced cancer care is accessible to patients in their local communities.
Role and Responsibilities of Dr. McDonald
In his new position, Dr. McDonald will serve as the primary reading radiologist for AON's affiliates: Florida Oncology & Hematology (FOH) located in Naples and Fort Myers, and Central Georgia Cancer Care (CGCC) in Macon. His responsibilities include providing expert interpretations for PET and CT imaging, along with performing advanced radiotheranostic therapies at the Naples and Fort Myers sites.
As AONC expands its radiotheranostic capabilities, Dr. McDonald is set to play a crucial role in:
- Training and developing physicians within the network.
- Supporting the growth of AON’s radiotheranostic programs.
- Bringing innovative radioligand treatment options to more AONC practice sites in 2026.
Commitment to Safety and Expertise
To comply with Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requirements, Dr. McDonald will conduct clinical preceptorships to ensure safe and effective expansion of radioligand therapy expertise throughout the AONC network. He will also lead clinical refinements of AON's radioligand therapy (RLT) protocols and assist in integrating newly FDA-approved therapies, further solidifying AONC's leadership in community oncology innovation.

Dr. McDonald’s Background and Experience
With over 30 years of experience in diagnostic imaging and radioligand therapies, Dr. McDonald previously served as the Medical Director of Imaging Services at Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute. His extensive career includes leadership positions at prominent institutions such as MD Anderson Cancer Center in Orlando and various major medical centers in Oregon and California.
As a fellow of the American College of Nuclear Medicine, Dr. McDonald is also recognized for his contributions to clinical research, education, and national presentations, solidifying his standing as an authority in nuclear medicine. He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia and completed his residency at the University of California Irvine Medical Center.
