CMS Posts Preliminary Payment Determination for New Category I CPT Code Covering Use of OGM for Constitutional Genetic Disorders

(Nasdaq: BNGO) offering CLIA-certified laboratory developed tests (LDTs) based on optical genome mapping (OGM), today announced that Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) posted the preliminary payment determination for the Category I Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) code for use of OGM in cytogenomic genome-wide analysis to detect structural and copy number variations related to constitutional genetic disorders. According to the preliminary determination, CMS will crosswalk to a previously established proprietary laboratory analyte (PLA) code for OGM, which is priced at $1263.53. Pricing at this level is $363.53 higher than 81228 and $103.53 higher than 81229, comparative codes that apply to use of microarrays and is listed on the clinical lab fee schedule (CLFS) at $900 (81228) and $1160 (81229). CPT codes for OGM are key components for obtaining reimbursement from third party payers when labs use LDTs based on OGM as alternatives to legacy cytogenetics methods such as karyotyping, fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH) and microarrays. There are now two such codes, 81195 for use of OGM in hematologic malignancy analysis and this latest one, 81354, for use of OGM in constitutional genetic disease.
