Three-Quarters of Employers Improve Workplace Safety Scores Over Three Years
The National Safety Council (NSC) has recently published the 2024-2025 MSD Solutions Index Pledge Community Report, revealing significant progress in workplace safety regarding musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). With involvement from Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), this year's report indicates that many organizations are making strides in cultivating a safety culture, albeit with a call for heightened investment in risk reduction and innovation.
Overview of the MSD Solutions Index
The MSD Solutions Index, initiated by the NSC MSD Solutions Lab in 2021, assesses how organizations tackle MSDs across three core areas: risk reduction, safety culture, and innovation. In this year's report, a noticeable 76% of participating organizations were classified as proactive or advancing in their MSD prevention strategies. However, the adoption of effective MSD tools and measurable risk reduction showed slower progress.
Improvement in Workplace Safety Scores
According to the report, nearly 72% of organizations that have participated in the MSD Solutions Index over the past three years have seen an improvement in their overall safety scores. This reflects the positive outcome associated with ongoing involvement in the MSD Pledge, emphasizing that a concentrated focus on MSD prevention is vital for enhancing workplace safety.
Dr. Paige DeBaylo, director of the MSD Solutions Lab at NSC, noted, “We’re encouraged to see organizations’ continued commitment to improving workplace safety through proactive culture-building and worker engagement. Still, the data show there’s more work to be done in setting risk reduction goals, addressing non-physical risk factors like job stress and colleague support, and leveraging emerging technologies to drive lasting MSD prevention.”
Key Findings from the 2024-2025 Report
- Almost 90% of organizations maintain an ergonomics or MSD prevention program.
- Increased tracking of leading indicators suggests a shift towards proactive prevention.
- A staggering 98% of organizations recognize the impact of non-physical risk factors, yet only half actively measure these elements.
- About 75% of organizations are utilizing MSD prevention technology, although 25% report limited understanding of available solutions.
The MSD Pledge: A Global Initiative
The MSD Solutions Index functions under the MSD Pledge, which aims to unite organizations in global efforts to reduce MSDs through innovation, collaboration, and data-driven improvements. Since its launch in 2022, hundreds of companies have signed the pledge, revealing a commitment to measurable safety progress and the transparency of reporting.
To further enhance MSD prevention, the report provides various recommendations, such as:
- Establishing clear safety goals.
- Involving frontline workers in safety decision-making processes.
- Implementing advanced interventions beyond mere personal protective equipment, including engineering controls and technology-based solutions.
