Tims China Partners with Tencent to Launch Eco-friendly Straws
**BEIJING, December 3, 2025** (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – TH International Limited (NASDAQ: THCH), the exclusive operator of Tim Hortons coffee shops in China, has made a significant step towards sustainability by launching an innovative eco-friendly straw. This product, developed in collaboration with Tencent’s CarbonXmade program, was unveiled during the 2025 Sustainable Social Value Innovation Summit in Beijing. The straws will be available at Tims stores in key cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, as part of a broader initiative to foster sustainable consumer choices.
Transforming Emissions: The Role of Carbon Capture Utilization
Tims China has been working diligently to produce these new straws using Carbon Capture Utilization (CCU) technology. This technology captures industrial CO₂ emissions and converts them into PPC polyols, which are further processed into PPC-TPU—a biodegradable material. The transformation involves a series of procedures including heating, precision extrusion, and cooling that result in straws compliant with Chinese regulatory standards.
- Straws are made with **3.185 grams of captured CO₂** per 100 units.
- They offer the same tactile quality as traditional PLA straws.
- They are fully biodegradable, contributing to an improved life-cycle performance.
A Unique Launch Event: Low-Carbon Fashion Show
The launch event featured a creative "low-carbon fashion show," showcasing designs crafted by students and faculty from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. The fashion pieces were inspired by coffee, incorporating earthy tones and dynamic shapes. Accessories such as crowns and handbags also employed the eco-friendly straws, merging creativity with sustainability.
Notably, the event's models included engineers from the production process and Tims store staff, enhancing the authenticity of the presentation and serving as effective ambassadors for the new eco-friendly product.
Commitment to Sustainable Practices and Future Innovations
Tims China is committed to enhancing its sustainability efforts. Following the successful rollout of its “Bring Your Own Cup — Save RMB 8” campaign, the launch of the carbon-captured straw marks another critical advancement. Additionally, the company has inaugurated a “Green Innovation Lab Store” in Shenzhen, which emphasizes coffee-ground recycling through innovative design.
- The store uses composite boards made from coffee grounds and straw fibers.
- It showcases circular design principles in its seating and decor.
On a global scale, Tim Hortons supports responsible sourcing through its “Coffee for Communities” program, aiding over **18,000 coffee farmers** by 2023. This initiative promotes sustainability and improves livelihoods through training and support.
