CVS Health Initiates Measles Vaccination Campaign in South Carolina
CVS Health® (NYSE:CVS) is stepping up to combat the current measles outbreak in South Carolina by providing the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine at select CVS Pharmacy® locations and MinuteClinic® facilities. This initiative aims to protect unvaccinated residents and curb the disease's spread as public health officials respond to the urgent situation.
Availability of the MMR Vaccine
In an effort to safeguard the community, CVS is offering the MMR vaccine at over 200 locations throughout South Carolina. Both CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic are equipped to administer the vaccine, ensuring accessibility for residents in need.
The MMR vaccine is not only essential for individuals to protect themselves but also plays a crucial role in community health. If the vaccine is administered within the first 72 hours after exposure to measles, it may provide some level of protection.
Understanding Measles Symptoms and Contagion
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), measles is a highly contagious viral infection that spreads through the air via respiratory droplets. Common symptoms include:
- Fever (possibly exceeding 104°F)
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Red, watery eyes
- Red and blotchy rash
Symptoms typically manifest between 7 to 14 days after exposure, sometimes taking as long as 21 days. The disease can be transmitted from an infected person up to four days before and after the rash appears, making vaccination critical for unprotected individuals.
Who Should Get Vaccinated?
Individuals aged three and older can receive the MMR vaccine at CVS Pharmacy locations. For children ages four to six, nurse practitioners and physician assistants at MinuteClinic will provide the essential second vaccination. It is important to note that the first dose for children aged 12 to 15 months cannot be administered at these facilities.
People born before 1957 are considered immune to measles, and those who have received two MMR vaccines also have immunity. CVS staff can assist patients in determining insurance coverage for the vaccine.
How to Schedule a Vaccination Appointment
While walk-in appointments are accepted at CVS Pharmacy, it is advisable for patients to schedule their vaccinations in advance. Appointment scheduling can be done through CVS.com or the CVS Health app to ensure availability. For MinuteClinic services, bookings can be made at MinuteClinic.com.
